The Shape of Motion

I developed my project analyzing the movement as a shape, bringing together the artistic with the scientific field. I started from the study of synesthesia and I focused on the relation between sound, colour and shape.
I took inspiration from the fields of sound, with the cymatics theory, where sound vibrations interact with matter, creating geometric shapes. Starting from the sound vibrations I linked to the movement in photography, known as chronophotography.
Regarding the choice of materials, I went for fabrics that follow the body movements. I was influenced by the dancers Duncan and Fuller’s flowing and soft dresses.
By referencing the experimentations on motion, I created multidimensional manipulations that make use of structured and dynamic volumes. The concept of my collection is based on an airy and insubstantial style, along with asymmetric shapes, sometimes draped, which bring to life outfits through vertical and animated silhouettes

My project started from the visualization of the collection, inspired by movement in photography, the chronophotography, which means the possibility of recording in a single image and in a single photographic plate various positions of a moving subject, in correspondence at different points in time.
Inspired by this idea, I based my project on the interaction between body and nature, dance and wind, combining human movement with natural movement.
Incorporating the dance of the body into the dance of the wind, my vision of "the shape of motion" came to life.

Anna Pettenò

Hi, my name is Anna Pettenò and I am a student of the fashion styling & communication course at NABA.
I was born and raised in a small mountain town in Trentino, living all my life in a small world so closed and isolated I have always wanted and researched things that were beyond my small possibilities.
My passion for fashion started from the small room where my grandmother kept her precious sewing machine and where I spent whole afternoons with her leafing through magazines among fabrics, threads and buttons.
I always wanted to dream big and so I always promised myself that if I ever started studying fashion I would have done it in one of the most important fashion capitals in the world, Milan.
And so it was.
My project started from the visualization of the "the shape of motion" collection, inspired by movement in photography, chronophotography, which means the possibility of recording various positions of a moving subject in a single image and in a single photographic plate.
Inspired by this idea of continuous movement, I based my project on the interaction between body and nature, dance and wind, combining human movement with natural movement.
Incorporating the dance of the body into the dance of the wind, my vision of "the shape of motion" came to life.
